2021 Year in Review

Duality: defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary as the quality or state of having two different or opposite parts or elements.

Duality: a term used in geometry and physics to explain interchangeable points and particle-wave theory.

Duality: a definition used in many spiritual practices to acknowledge that all things are on a continuum and can be considered extremes of the same thing. If duality is recognized, then it is possible to harmonize the two sides and see the challenge from all perspectives instead of what is “right” or “wrong.”

Duality: a word that our team continued to lean into in 2021. We use the concept of ‘dualities’ in reflecting on our work, our learning, our personal growth, and to acknowledge that many emotions and truths often co-exist. Dualities were key themes in our conversations and team meetings throughout 2021:

  • We are living through unprecedented times that require big ideas and bold action. Rest is radical and essential.

  • We find wonder in the natural world – from the top of a mountain to a park bench in the middle of downtown Denver.

  • The food production industry, from the farm to slaughter, processing, shipping, cold chain storage, restaurants, grocery stores, and markets—is built on a structure of exploitation of labor. We work in all parts of this industry. We have been and will continue to ask how we can contribute to new industry models that do not underpay and undervalue workers and instead are built upon pillars of care, equity, and justice.

  • We believe in ‘many small’ agriculture producers sharing resources (financing, infrastructure, labor). We believe in paying the true cost of food. We also believe in food access and accessibility. We do not yet have models that account for all of these truths. And we will continue working towards a future that does.

  • Our progress is not linear. Sometimes we press forward, sometimes we jump back, we are almost always moving from side to side, and oftentimes we have to go all the way around in a circle before we realize that we are back where we started. *It’s quite helpful to approach your starting point from behind. With all the knowledge you gained while circling around, you really have a great head start on your second attempt!

In our work we are met with failures and successes, sometimes in the same project in the same week. We celebrate our success! And we are constantly learning from our missed steps. And forever, we have a lot to learn. Here is to both celebrating 2021 and looking forward to 2022 and the commitment to continued learning, work and growth.
